                     Parental Controls

One of the points in the contract refers to Parental Controls.

This is part of the iPad where you can set blocks on the iPad that

cannot be bypassed, regardless of which network the user may be on.

It is a powerful part of the iPad and should be used wisely. It can cause problems, so

when you set it, it may need to be altered.

To access the Parental Controls

Go into Settings on the iPad and tap Restrictions where you will be prompted to setup a password. This should be different to the screen lock password and not one that is easy to guess for the student. Do not forget this password.  Write it down somewhere safe. If you do forget it there is no way to remove it without erasing the iPad.

In the first section you can turn on and off things like the Camera, FaceTime and the ability to add and remove apps. The important one here to consider is In-app Purchases. You can run up a massive bill with In-app Purchases and it is an area best avoided. The next section allows for content restrictions. The Apple material is all related to age ratings. This is only valid for material purchased from Apple, not imported from other areas. Many people want to restrict everything, but there is a warning about that. Any app that can access the internet freely must be given a 17+ rating. This means that an app like Google Chrome would be blocked. The final part of this is the blocks on Websites. There are two levels of blocks. One for Adult Content and one to only allow specific websites.

The next section is all about Privacy. All iPads have the ability to find out their location. This can be very useful, but dangerous. Go through these and look at what is possible. For example in Location Services you have the ability to see which apps are using Location Services and the ability to turn them off and not allow changes. At school we will use some location services in relation to Maps and Weather, but not for games. There are also privacy restrictions for the Camera, Microphone and Sharing.
